  • What does this passage show me about Jesus’ relationship with other people?.
  • What does this show me about Jesus’ relationship with God the Father?.
  • Read slowly through each passage and ask some important questions and write down the answers that the Holy Spirit lays on your heart. I encourage you to start reading a story or a chapter each day from one of the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. As we focus intently on our Saviour Jesus we will become more like Him as the Spirit of God works powerfully in our hearts and molds and makes us into Jesus’ image. So, we’re going to spend the next several months looking deeply into Jesus’ life in the Gospels and learning from His holy character and perfect life. Now we need to answer another question: Where do we see Jesus so that we can focus on Him and become more like Him? We see Jesus’ holy character and perfect life in God’s Word the Bible and specifically in the Gospels. So, the second step to becoming like our Saviour Jesus is: Step #2: We need to fix our eyes and hearts on our Saviour Jesus Christ and behold His holy character and holy life on earth. We need to set our eyes and hearts on someone who is absolutely holy, someone who is worthy of our devotion and of being emulated in every way. Now these people are not ultimately worth molding our lives after because they are sinful people, just like us. If you’re focusing on your parents, your friends, your teachers, your boss or your favourite sports or entertainment star then you will become more like them in speech, habit and character. The truth is that you become what you behold, what you fix your eyes and your heart on.

The second step to becoming more like Jesus is found in 2 Corinthians 3:18.Ģ Corinthians 3:18 says, “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” But when we depend fully on the Spirit He will use His awesome power to renew our minds, transform our habits and character and make us more like our holy Saviour Jesus Christ. Let’s not neglect the power of prayer and dependence on the Spirit because without this we will never become more like Jesus. 2 Key Steps to Becoming More Like Jesus Step #1: Depend fully and daily on the power of the Holy Spirit and ask Him to make us more like Jesus. But the question is: How do we become more like Jesus?ĭo we need to try harder to become like Jesus, to buckle down and try to love others the way Jesus loved them? Do we need to put all of our mental energy into rejecting sin and living a holy life? Do we need to set aside all distractions in our own strength and focus really hard to become more like Jesus? The reality is that we cannot become more like Jesus Christ on our own, but praise God that the Holy Spirit of God can build His holy fruit and Jesus’ holy character and habits into our lives. Becoming more like Jesus is the key to the Christian life. As we become more like our Saviour Jesus Christ we will live lives of genuine worship, loving obedience, disciple-making, and we will produce more of the fruit of the Spirit and God will be glorified. As we become more like Jesus we will live holy lives of loving obedience as 1 Peter 1:14-16 commands us. We will get involved in making new disciples as we proclaim the Gospel to unbelievers and we will help other believers grow in love, holiness and faithful Gospel service for Jesus. As we become more like Jesus Christ we begin to have His heart for the growth of His people and the salvation of the lost and we live out His Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20. As we become more like Jesus we start to love others unconditionally and sacrificially and live out Jesus’ command in John 13:34-35. But praise God that He has given us His Holy Spirit to live in our hearts and He is making us more like Jesus each day!Īs the Spirit of God goes to work in our lives and makes us more like Jesus amazing things happen to us. As we compare our attitudes and desires to Jesus and as we compare our reactions to difficult circumstances and our words and actions to how Jesus lived we see so many ways that we are not like our holy Saviour Jesus.

God makes us righteous and holy in His sight and so to Him we look like Jesus, but there are so many areas of our lives where we don’t look or act like Jesus. When we come to saving faith in Jesus Christ God washes away our sins and makes us new creations as John 3:16 and 2 Corinthians 5:17 tell us.
